Step back in time…
The Arigna Mining Experience
Welcome to the Arigna Mining Experience, where we bring history to life, tell the story of Ireland’s coal mining industry and explore the themes of energy – past, present and future. At Arigna, we don’t just take you on a journey back in time, we also bring you underground!
Coal was mined here in the Arigna Valley from the 1700s through to 1990, when the mines were closed. With massive community and Government support, the Derreenavoggy Mine reopened as a visitor attraction in 2003. Since then, close to 400,000 people have enjoyed the Arigna Mining Experience, making this community-inspired initiative one of the most popular local attractions in Roscommon.
Weaving your way through the beautiful scenery of the Leitrim and Roscommon countryside, you’ll see our building, impressively designed to resemble the slag heap that would typically be part of a coal mining operation.
Okay, grab your hard hat… and let’s go underground
Now it’s time to experience first-hand the working conditions of those who spent so much of their time labouring under these mountains. You’ll be in the company of an ex-miner, someone who knows their way around these mines – so don’t worry, you won’t get lost!
